Switching Between Jason and Lucia

Rockstar showed the switch for the first time in An Extended Look. What outlets describe, what Rockstar itself has stated, and what the same idea looked like in GTA 5.

Last updated: 2026-08-28

GTA 6 has two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. That much is confirmed: Rockstar named them, published their bios and built the game's premise around the pair.

How you move between them was, until recently, the largest unanswered question about how the game plays. For three years the only evidence was retailer listing copy - a sentence on a storefront page, not a Rockstar statement. On August 27, 2026 that changed: An Extended Look ran twenty-six minutes of gameplay captured in-game on a PlayStation 5, and the outlets that watched the premiere describe the switch working seamlessly, including in the middle of a mission, with a choice of playing a mission together or separately.

That is reported, not confirmed. Rockstar published the runtime and the capture platform; the contents of the video are known through the outlets that watched it. This page keeps the two apart line by line, and it keeps the GTA 5 comparison clearly labelled as a statement about GTA 5.

What Rockstar has confirmed

Confirmed

Three things, all from Rockstar's own material:

  • Two playable protagonists. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are both named and bio'd on the official site, and the premise Rockstar publishes puts their partnership at the centre of the story: when an easy score goes wrong the two find themselves in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida, forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.
  • Lucia is the series' first non-optional female protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto. The qualifier is exact and it matters: player-created female characters have existed in the series' online component for years, but this is the first time a mainline campaign puts one in a role you cannot decline.
  • An Extended Look exists, runs twenty-six minutes and was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5. Those two technical facts come from Rockstar itself.

What Rockstar has not stated is how the switch is performed. No button, no wheel, no cooldown, no rule about when it is available. Those are open questions with no official answer, and this page will not fill them from inference.

What An Extended Look is reported to show

Reported

Outlets that watched the Netflix premiere - Kotaku, PC Gamer, GamesRadar and TechRadar among them - describe two things about the switch that several accounts agree on:

  • The switch is seamless, and it happens during missions rather than only between them.
  • A mission can be played together or separately, presented as a choice rather than as a fixed structure.

Both sit at the reported tier. They come from descriptions of the footage, not from a Rockstar statement about the mechanic, and the presentation went to a public YouTube release the same evening rather than being available to check frame by frame at the time these accounts were written.

That is still a significant change in the evidence. Before August 27 there was no demonstration of switching at all. After it, the mechanic has been seen working by people who described it consistently, which moves it from "expected by everyone" to "observed and reported" - two different things that were routinely conflated on other sites for three years.

What is still unstated

The list is longer than the answered part, and it is worth being explicit about it, because these are exactly the details other pages will fill with invention:

  • The input. No button, no held direction, no radial wheel has been described by Rockstar.
  • When it is available. Whether the switch is free in the open world, gated during certain missions, or restricted by story progress.
  • What the other protagonist does. Whether Jason or Lucia continues to exist on their own schedule while you are playing the other, and what state you find them in on return.
  • Whether the choice has consequences. "Together or separately" is reported as a choice; whether the two routes differ in outcome, reward or story is not established.
  • Whether there is a third playable character. Nothing suggests one. Nothing rules one out either; Rockstar has said only that there are two protagonists.

Each of these is a real question with no public answer today. When one gets answered, it lands here with its source.

The GTA 5 comparison, and its limits

Reported

Grand Theft Auto V is the only prior mainline GTA with multiple playable leads, so it is the natural reference point - as long as it stays a reference point rather than a forecast.

In GTA 5, per the encyclopedic record of that game, the player switched between Michael, Franklin and Trevor at will through a directional compass on the HUD, though the feature was restricted at certain points during the story. Inside missions, the game could switch characters automatically to complete a specific objective. The compass avatar carried state: it flashed red when that character was in danger and white when they held a tactical advantage, which turned the switch into a combat tool rather than only a travel convenience. Reviewers at the time noted both uses - a way to flank in a firefight, and a way to skip a long drive.

The structural difference with GTA 6 is not the number of characters, it is the relationship. GTA 5's three leads were separate criminals whose lives intersected; Rockstar's own premise for GTA 6 describes a pair who are forced to rely on each other. A switch between two people in the same story at the same moment is a different design problem from a switch between three people living apart, and the reported together-or-separately choice reads as an answer to that problem rather than a version of GTA 5's.

Why the retailer listings were weak evidence

Reported

It is worth recording how this was covered before there was gameplay, because the same failure will repeat on the next unanswered mechanic.

For three years the strongest evidence for character switching in GTA 6 was retailer listing copy - storefront pages describing switching between Jason and Lucia during the story and taking part in missions as a duo. Retail copy is written from a publisher's marketing material, not by the studio, and it is routinely wrong about mechanics. It was treated across the field as near-confirmation anyway, and the resulting write-ups described cooldowns, story gating and a GTA 5-style character wheel as though those had been shown.

None of that had been shown. The listings turned out to point in roughly the right direction, which is the outcome that makes the habit dangerous: the method was bad and the answer was close, so nobody revised the method.

This wiki's position is unchanged by the outcome. A retailer's product blurb is a marketing artefact and gets tiered as one, and a mechanic is described as demonstrated only once it has been demonstrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?+

Reported yes. Outlets that watched An Extended Look on August 27, 2026 describe seamless switching between the two, including in the middle of a mission. Rockstar itself has confirmed only that there are two playable protagonists; it has not described the mechanic.

How do you switch characters in GTA 6?+

Not established. No button, held direction or radial wheel has been described by Rockstar or reported from the gameplay presentation. Anything specific you read about the input today is invented.

Can you play a mission as both characters at once?+

Reporting from the Extended Look premiere describes a choice of playing a mission together or separately. Whether the two routes differ in outcome or reward is not established.

How did character switching work in GTA 5?+

GTA 5 used a directional compass on the HUD to switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor at will, restricted at certain points in the story. Missions could switch characters automatically, and the compass avatar flashed red when a character was in danger and white when they had a tactical advantage.

Is there a third playable character in GTA 6?+

Nothing indicates one. Rockstar has named two playable protagonists and nothing more; the absence of an announcement is not the same as a denial, but there is no evidence for a third.
